I purchased the camera to record “events”. I have noticed that many people recommend installing a 32 gig card but I am not sure why this option is better than the supplied 4 gig card. The camera comes with a 4 gig memory card. I am going to use the suction cup mount supplied with the camera and try to scrape the glue on mount off of my windshield. The adjusting nut on the windshield mount is not captive so if you loosen it too much and then remove the camera, the adjusting nut will fall on to the floor of the vehicle.Įven though the suction cup mount is bigger than the glue on mount, I can mount it near the top of the windshield and it does not obstruct my view of the road. Were I to remove the camera from the glue on mount, I would have to loosen the adjusting nut and then apply a firm pull on the camera to disengage it. The suction cup mount allows me to simply unlock the locking lever, lift the tab at the edge of the suction cup and the camera and mount is free and in my hand. Because I live in a “bad” neighborhood and do not want my vehicle broken into, I remove the camera from the windshield each time I park. I have known people who would break a window in a vehicle to get something they see inside – sometimes even if they do not know what it is they are stealing. I compared the video obtained with the suction cup mount with the video I obtained using the glue on mount and could see no difference even on bumpy roads. If the inside of your windshield and the suction cup are both relatively clean, the suction cup mount is secure and steady. The suction cup mount has a locking lever. Trek mount.īuying a second mount seems like a hassle so I began using the supplied suction cup mount with the camera. However, the fit of the ball in the windshield mounted socket is tight enough that it also requires a firm push to get it inserted even without the adjusting nut installed and a firm tug to remove it.Īdditionally, since I have two vehicles that I will be using the camera in, I will need to buy a second i. Trek glue on mount allows me to disconnect the camera from the part that is glued to the windshield and to leave the ball inserted in the socket at the top of the camera. With the ball/socket mount on the camera being so tight, it is not practical to disconnect the mount from the camera each time I want to move it to my second vehicle. In order to provide a steady mount for the camera, Garmin made the ball socket at the top of the camera tight so that it requires a firm push to get the mounting ball on both the suction cup mount and on the i. The heat gun worries me because there is a possibility that if the windshield is heated in one location, it may crack. Put the mount in the wrong place and you will need to live with it, scrape it off with a razor blade or use a heat gun to get it off your windshield. Trek stick on mount: be sure that the place that you select to apply the stick on mount is where you want it to be because the glue is very aggressive. Trek windshield mount consists of three parts: A socket that you glue to the windshield and a link that consists of two balls mounted to either end of a plastic shaft – sort of like a small dumbbell and a plastic nut to tighten the ball into the windshield socket.Ī word of caution when installing the i. Trek glue on mount when I purchased the camera. This could come in handy if you are trying to prove that you were not exceeding the speed limit should an event occur.Īccording to some reviews there is concern that the suction cup windshield mount may not be optimal. If an event occurs, you are there and presumably know where you are so why do you need GPS?Īfter more consideration having GPS capabilities provides a precise time of day and also allows the device to record your speed. The Garmin was more expensive but Garmin is a name that I have heard many times over the years and it is – at least I think it is – an American company although the camera itself was made in Taiwan.Īs I was deliberating on which dash cam to purchase, I considered the usefulness and extra cost of having GPS capabilities. I bought the Garmin dash cam so that I could have a record of things that happen in front of my car.
